Obsolete installations

Mountain Wilderness France

The association

The association Mountain Wilderness France aims to bring together mountaineers and mountain lovers from around the world to protect the mountain environment and defend the last remaining areas of wilderness in the mountains. It seeks to change behaviors towards the mountains through actions in the field, expert publications, and engagement with political, associative, and economic actors. Ensuring the preservation of natural balances, questioning unreasonable practices, proposing gentle approaches to the mountains, and supporting a diversified mountain economy are part of their missions.

With the “Obsolete Installations” initiative, which has been ongoing for 20 years now, the association assists in the inventory and dismantling of these abandoned tourist, industrial, agricultural, and military facilities, which are a real visual pollution and a certain danger to visitors and wildlife. Volunteer work camps are regularly organized throughout the seasons.

The project

Mountain Wilderness is tackling an obsolete military installation. On August 26th and 27th, 2023, above Lake Mont-Cenis in Haute-Maurienne, they will be removing barbed wire lines (which harm ungulates) and remnants of Italian and French lines dating back to World War II. Teams have been distributed around the former forts of Ronce, Malamot, and Turra.

To sum up, 4 tons of scrap metal—barbed wire, sheets, poles—have been removed, including 30 kilograms of glass. “The barbed wire was wedged between rocks, so when you cut them, you feel like you’re freeing the mountain a bit. Visually, it’s very telling; you immediately see an impact on the landscape, and you feel like you’re letting nature breathe again,” a volunteer recounted. That says it all.

Our support has also been used to add functionalities to the collaborative website dedicated to this campaign: installationsobsoletes.org

Ecovolunteers in the Bauges Massif

Bauges massif natural regional park

The association

The Regional Natural Park of the Bauges Massif works to promote economic development and quality of life, to plan the territory, to inform and raise awareness among residents and visitors, and to conduct experimental or innovative actions.

The Park is home to fragile fauna and flora, and it is also a place for living, working, and recreation. Its objective is to enable residents, visitors, and tourists to understand the various issues and activities practiced there in order to preserve the environment and facilitate the coexistence of different uses.

The project

To address the challenges of preservation and sharing of space, the Park has implemented a communication campaign called ‘Respect the Mountain!’. For several years now, eco-volunteers have been recruited during the summer season to convey messages of preservation. Twelve eco-volunteers (6 young people aged between 20 and 30 in July and 6 in August) are selected to carry out awareness-raising actions on the ground: on tourist trails, at mountain peaks/cols, in front of a refuge, along the Chéran River, etc. Over the course of four weeks, the eco-volunteers spend one week in training and three weeks in action. They have one day off per week (Mondays) and work in pairs.

Their mission: on sites of high heritage value and often with high visitor numbers (Natura 2000 sites, National Reserve for Hunting and Wildlife, Wild River), they raise awareness among visitors about environmental issues and the best practices to adopt.

Protect ice & Reduce waste

For My Planet - Act for the future

The association

The primary objective of “For My Planet – Act For the Future” is to promote ecology and citizenship by developing cultural and scientific activities with an ecological, civic, and social character aimed at children and young people. For My Planet is a school of social and environmental citizenship whose aim is to provide teenagers with the keys and means to address the ecological and social challenges of our time and to put them into action. The association advocates the idea that taking action is the driver of transition. “As soon as we take action, whatever action we decide to take, no matter how small it may be, we initiate the transition. An environmental and social transition for our society. Also, an inner personal transition because indeed, taking action makes us happy.”

The project

The association aims to provide teenagers with the keys and means to address the ecological and social challenges of our time. Through the “Protect Ice & Reduce Waste” project, supported for two years, about sixty young people from six middle schools in France (Annecy: two middle schools, Toulon, Tours, Nantes, and Tiffauges (85)) become Environmental Sentinels by receiving training during the school year on climate change and its consequences in the mountains. They also carry out their own eco-responsible actions within their school or city, and in April, they all come together for a five-day scientific expedition in Chamonix. The following year, they give about twenty conferences to raise awareness in various settings (companies, schools, hospitals, etc.).

Zero Waste Mountain

Mountain Riders

The association

Mountain Riders is an association for ecological transition education founded in 2001. It encourages children and young people to become drivers of change, invites practitioners to engage in responsible initiatives, supports tourism stakeholders, and involves citizens and elected officials in preserving mountains that are both essential and fragile!

The project

Mountain Riders coordinates a waste reduction program in the mountains every year. Through the deployment of educational tools, the dissemination of awareness campaigns, and the organization of waste collection operations, they encourage people of all ages to take action to clean up and preserve our mountains from waste.

In 2022, the association embarked on a major waste characterization project: Mountain Zero Waste 2030. The goal is to identify the typology of waste during collection operations to understand their origins and thus reduce this pollution in our mountains. A characterization kit was designed and produced in 10 copies using recycled materials, thanks to our financial support. These kits were made available in 10 mountainous territories (Vosges, Jura, Oisans, Tarentaise, etc.); training sessions are provided to empower local stakeholders and collect data. And we were present at the collection in Les Menuires!

Nest&Climb

The Conservatory of Natural Spaces of Haute-Savoie (Asters-CEN74)

The association

In partnership with local authorities, state services, and numerous organizations, the Conservatoire d’espaces naturels de Haute-Savoie (Asters-CEN74) aims to fulfill a mission of general interest, including:

– Preserving and managing natural environments and species,
– Providing advice and support for territorial policies,
– Scientific and technical expertise on natural areas, species, habitats, and landscapes,
– Environmental awareness, training, communication, and network animation.

The project

The alpine walls frequented by climbers are home to a sensitive avifauna, sometimes rare and often protected (for example: the bearded vulture). Information and education for practitioners are essential for the preservation of these birds. Maintaining and monitoring this birdlife on practice sites in coexistence with climbing activities is crucial for their sustainability. Monitoring nesting in the walls and informing climbers are therefore central to maintaining practice sites and preserving the natural environment.

With the Nest&Climb project, ASTERS 74 proposed establishing a connection between practitioners and naturalists to inform about the presence of nests, their occupancy period, and routes to avoid during these periods. Thus, funding from the Snowleader corporate foundation was used for community engagement (digital communication, conferences, and awareness), on-site information (printing of signs, installation, maintenance), and monitoring of detected nests (monitoring of territorial species sites).

The Alpine Garden of Semnoz

France Nature Environnement Haute-Savoie

The association

France Nature Environnement Haute-Savoie is an environmental defense and preservation association that operates throughout the department. With its 50 member associations, it works closely with local communities and implements various actions: naturalist expertise, environmental education, legal monitoring, and more.

The project

Created in 1983 by a group of mountain guides, the Alpine Garden is a portion of the Semnoz alpine pasture (Bauges massif) dedicated to showcasing around a hundred different species of flowers characteristic of the mid-mountain range, with a focus on preservation. This space is free and open to all from June to September. Every year, FNE Haute-Savoie takes care of maintaining the Alpine Garden to allow gentians, orchids, lilies, and centaureas to flourish.

By organizing summer events and activities, environmental educators raise awareness among hundreds of visitors about preserving mid-mountain biodiversity. While visitors of all ages enjoy visiting the Alpine Garden, this space is particularly suitable for young audiences, who are especially important to engage as future citizens.

As it is essential for us to preserve fauna and flora through our mission of protecting the mountain environment, the Snowleader Foundation supports the Alpine Garden. Public events and activities aimed at both the general public and extracurricular centers will thus be maintained.

Obsolete Installations

Mountain Wilderness

The association

Mountain Wilderness aims to unite mountaineers and mountain lovers worldwide to protect mountain environments and defend the last remaining wild mountain areas. Through actions in the field, expert publications, and engagement with political, associative, and economic actors, the organization seeks to change attitudes towards the mountains. Ensuring the preservation of natural balances, challenging unreasonable practices, promoting gentle approaches to the mountains, and supporting a diverse mountain economy are among its missions.

With the “Obsolete Installations” initiative, which has been ongoing for 20 years, Mountain Wilderness assists in the inventory and dismantling of abandoned tourist, industrial, agricultural, and military facilities. These installations, which represent visual pollution and pose risks to visitors and wildlife, are regularly addressed through volunteer-driven projects organized throughout the seasons.

The project

Sensitized to this environmental issue, we were present at the site during the autumn of 2022, in the Hautes-Alpes, in the commune of Saint-Firmin, at the gates of the Valgaudemar valley, between Grenoble and Gap.

The objective was to dismantle a ski lift that had been unused for 17 years, located in the buffer zone of the Écrins National Park, between 1,350 m and 1,558 m above sea level. This ski lift, called the “Col des Vachers,” was built by the Pomagalski company in 1963 (with a vertical drop of 210 m and a length of 660 m). It operated for the last time during the winter of 2004-2005. The new municipal council of St Firmin contacted Mountain Wilderness to initiate the dismantling of this facility, which had been unused for 15 years. In addition to the departure and arrival stations, the engine, the tank, and the counterweights, this facility includes 6 intermediate pylons.

The League for the Protection of Birds - LPO AuRA

The association

The League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) has been working for over 100 years to protect birds and the ecosystems they depend on, including the associated wildlife and flora, and more broadly biodiversity, throughout France.

LPO AuRA was born from the merger of the 9 local LPO associations in the region.

Their project “Biodiv’sports” aims to disseminate areas of high sensitivity for wildlife on platforms and websites listing sports routes in natural environments (IGN Hiking, Camptocamp, Whympr, etc.).

The project

The project is based on local consultation processes aimed at integrating environmental issues into sports practices. It aims to create a dialogue with practitioners, improve knowledge and consideration of wildlife during mountain outings. It brings together numerous stakeholders in the natural environment: protected areas, associations, space managers, sports federations, clubs, users of the natural environment, etc.

Their goal? To provide users of the natural environment with the knowledge they need to understand the conservation issues of species, grasp the concept of disturbance, and voluntarily adjust their behavior. The key concept of this project is the reconciliation of activities. “Biodiv’sports” addresses all types of wildlife (birds, goats, etc.) and concerns many sports activities (ski touring, mountaineering, snowshoeing, climbing, paragliding, canoeing, trail running, etc.). Since 2018, the tool has been operational on sites such as Camptocamp, IGN Rando, Whympr… and the project is now gaining momentum.

The Mountain Mural

The Conservatoire of Natural Spaces of Haute-Savoie (Asters-CEN74)

The association

In partnership with local authorities, state services, and numerous organizations, the Conservatoire of Natural Spaces of Haute-Savoie (Asters-CEN74) aims to carry out a mission of public interest focused on:

– Preserving and managing natural habitats and species,
– Providing advice and support for territorial policies,
– Offering scientific and technical expertise on natural areas, species, habitats, and landscapes,
– Raising awareness about the environment, providing training, communication, and networking activities.

The project

Over the years, members of the association noticed that while there were tools available to explain climate change in a global context, there were none specifically tailored to the mountain environment. Thus, they embarked on a project to create a game called “The Mountain Fresco,” inspired by the concept of the Climate Fresco.

Since 2021, the goal has been to develop an educational game inspired by the Climate Fresco concept. The game consists of cards that need to be arranged in logical order to recreate a schematic view of the impacts of climate change on the mountains, their natural areas, and the human activities dependent on them. After raising awareness, the game also encourages players to envision desirable futures. In 2024, the final phase has commenced, involving the graphic design and printing of the game.
